The 2009 Season is Here:

Pottsgrove Loses Epic Battle

In what should be remembered as one of the greatest high school football games of recent memory, Round 1 of the State AAA Playoffs was definately a classic. A game that had more momentum swings....more big plays....and as much emotion as any championship calibur game in recent memory, Archbishop Wood knocked off the previously undefeated Falcons 30-28 at Charles Martin Memorial Field in northeast Philadelphia on Friday night. After returning the opening kickoff for an 85 yard touchdown, the Vikings immediately seized the momentum, and a 7-0 lead, before many of the Pottsgrove fans got to their seats. To the credit of the Falcons they calmly held in there, until their star, and MMQB Player of the Year, Terrell Chestnut led his team back and tied up the game in the early part of the second quarter. The two teams traded scores, but freshman Nick Visco nailed a 33 yard FG as the first half ended, and the Vikes led 17-14 at the half. Then Chestnut showed more of his maturation as a QB as he found TE Scott Madl all alone for a 43 yard touchdown pass, as the 'Grove took its first lead of the ballgame. Then ultimately the 'player of the game' Wood QB Jery Rahill simply took over the game. He willed his team to victory with a great determination, and some, quite honestly, flat out unbelievable play. Rahill used both his talented arm and his elusive feet to bring back the Vikings and score the winning TD, on a nine yard run late in the fourth quarter. Pottsgrove had one last chance, but a costly holding penalty virtually ended all chance for the Falcons to pull out any last second heroic win. The amazing 2009 season ended for the Falcons in Philadelphia, but not before setting many school and individual records. Head coach Rick Pennypacker won his 200th career game and was named the MMQB Coach of the Year, while finishing with a 14-1 overall record.

The storybook season for Pius came to an end on Saturday night at the hands of Tri Valley in the first round of the PIAA A State Playoffs. Coach George Parkinson and his "Dirty Dozen" deserve a lot of credit for hanging together and putting together a wonderful ride, which was the 2009 football season. Cole Parkinson and Mike Matthews combined to become the first pair of Pius backs to rush for over 1,000 yards in the same season. Josh Rogers led the area in sacks, and guys like Tyler Pollick, George Lockbaum, and Martin Shields led the Winged Lions to an incredible eight win season, and an unlikely District1/12 A title. Congratulations to the entire Pius football family.
